The forbidden archaeology5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Tamblyn said he had approached council officers but not received a clear response. The council issued a statement to the Observer justifying its decision but did not explain what harm detectorists might do on the sea flats when the tide was out. The saltmarsh north of the beach is essential to about 150,000 migrating birds and the dunes are used for nesting, so the council has forbidden fires, camping, sky lanterns and jet skiing, while dogs are also banned from the beach during the summer months. The council introduced a public space protection order on 1 April preventing various activities on the beach and coastline because it is a site of special scientific interest – part of the Humber estuary. “If they came up with a reason for doing this we’d accept it, but they haven’t.” ![]() ![]() “We are certainly considering challenging this in the high court,” he said. Alan Tamblyn, its general secretary, said the council’s actions were “very misguided and very ill-judged and can’t be justified”. The hobby has become increasingly popular since Mackenzie Crook’s BBC series Detectorists first aired in 2014, and the National Council for Metal Detecting now has 30,000 members. ![]()

Reading beloved5/11/2023 ![]() This does not mean that Clark absolves the main actors of responsibility – each carried a ‘smoking pistol’, but the meticulous reader may be surprised to find that Russia probably bore a far greater responsibility through its political actions than the other European powers. He consequently refuses to mark out one culprit: there were many of them. While Sleepwalkers sets the bar for future scholarly works trying to weigh the seemingly countless reasons for the outbreak of the First World War, the author calls it a ‘tragedy, not a crime’. ![]() Yet neither Christopher Clark's Sleepwalkers nor Sean McMeekin's July 1914: Countdown to War adhere to this consensus. There has also been a similarly extensive view of Germany as the main – if not the only – culprit since Fritz Fischer established this in his 1961 Griff nach der Weltmacht, even the majority of German historians – especially from the left – have supported the thesis. ![]() ![]() For nearly a century there has been consensus among historians that the First World War was ‘the great seminal catastrophe of this century’, as George Kennan characterised it. ![]()

Never Kiss a Stranger by Logan Chance5/10/2023 ![]() In the future humans exist underground, the surface having become uninhabitable due to the release of a virus years before in 1996. Sorry for the inconvenience, we look forward to resolving this for you soon." Please hold on to your copy and we will follow up with further information as soon as possible. We are continuing to review our workflow processes to prevent these issues from happening in the future. The fault was traced to the initial 4K data when one of the scanned reels contained some overlap in content and this wasn't flagged in the initial conform. This error was not spotted by the producers, the facility that carried out the work or the filmmaker who approved the restoration. "Sadly, we have identified a fault on our 12 Monkeys UHD disc (FCD2191/AV380), where at approximately 41 minutes some footage is briefly repeated with no interruption to the soundtrack. Arrow admitted the misprint, vowing to correct it (a similar problem was discovered in Arrow's 4K release of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer). This error was spotted by fans, who contacted Arrow Video to point it out. Bruce Willis's character is interrogated and the tracking shots and close-ups of the researchers questioning him are duplicated. The Arrow release of this film contained a mistake in a scene about 40 minutes in. There are two releases of the film, by different companies, one from Arrow Video (released both in the US and UK) and the US Blu-ray by Universal. ![]()

The da vinci code book5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() They found that among the most religious participants, this counterevidence lessened the belief in the conspiracy. Next, the researchers called 50 of the original students back and presented them with historical evidence that the Da Vinci conspiracy is false. ![]() People who were religious, knowledgeable about the Bible and desiring of social approval, on the other hand, tended not to buy into the Da Vinci conspiracy. The students most likely to believe the conspiracies in Brown's novel were those who enjoyed the book the most, expressed the most New Age beliefs, and felt the most anxiety about dying. They also answered questions about New Age beliefs, such as "The whole cosmos is an unbroken living whole that modern man has lost contact with." In the first, they asked 144 students to rate their agreement with Da Vinci conspiracy beliefs, such as "The church has burned witches and other 'heretics' to keep the truth about Jesus hidden." The students also filled out questionnaires about their religiosity, biblical knowledge, enjoyment of "The Da Vinci Code" novel or movie, and their fear of death. The researchers gathered college students who had read the book and conducted two studies. "The Da Vinci Code" was a good starting point, Newheiser said, because unlike other conspiracy believers, Da Vinci conspiracy believers are not marginalized as tin-foil hat types. Newheiser and her colleagues decided to use belief in this "Da Vinci conspiracy" to find out what people get out of believing in conspiracy theories. ![]()

![]() ![]() I did a lot of research when creating the character of Brigid to the point where I understood her. ![]() ![]() Whatever the reason, people with Irish blood can be found in many parts of the world. Many Irishmen and women ended up in Australia, either voluntarily fleeing poverty and starvation just as Brigid did in ‘ The Girl from County Clare’, or involuntarily as convicts. It was the last port of call for the Titanic on its fatal voyage, and where the Lusitania was torpedoed in the waters nearby. We were fortunate enough to visit Cobh (pronounced Cove) in the south of Ireland last year and will visit again next year. There is something about the Irish spirit that is infectious. Ireland – the land of song, of sadness and joy: the land where people have survived the worst and can still laugh at themselves. ![]()

Abigel szabo magda5/9/2023 ![]() Likewise, when the French translation of her 1987 novel Az Ajtó ( The Door) was published, the critic for Le Figaro described her as a “precious gem”, comparable in merit to Flaubert and Proust.Īlthough translated into 33 languages already during her lifetime (the figure now stands at 40), Magda Szabó herself seemed baffled by her international success. ![]() The German translation came out in 1960, marking Magda Szabó’s first steps towards international fame. Soon after Szabó’s first novel, Freskó, was published in 1958, it was brought to the attention of the German publishing house Insel by Hermann Hesse, who referred to Szabó as a “brilliant catch” for the publisher. In 2018, a documentary film was made about the life of Magda Szabó, in which director Gábor Zsigmond Papp explores what he refers to as the “bizarre question” of why an author who is regarded as among the best in the world outside Hungary is so little esteemed in her own country. ![]() |
