Harlan County Horrors by Mari Adkins5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() The frightening aspect of this fact? She only lived there for 3.5 years. There’s one thing all her novels, shorts, and dialogues with me have in common: Harlan, KY. She’s also written a trio of novels, two of which I’ve read. You guys/gals think you know everything going on with Apex? Nah, you just see the tip of the ‘berg! Our brains work overtime thinking of ways to frighten, to sicken you, the readers.įor over a year now, Mari Adkins has been sharing stories of her past with me. So, I’ve been reading about Harlan county and toying with story ideas, but mostly I’ve been sitting on the news, waiting for them to make their official announcement about Harlan County Horror. I want to use Harlan and it’s bizarre, rich history to make some good horror. There’s a rich mountain culture there, the Cumberland Gap,…and there’s also things like the Hatfields & McCoys, coal mine mafia, supernatural weirdness, and scary hillbillies. All stories will be set or based around Harlan, KY. ![]() Mari Adkins and I are releasing an anthology titled “Harlan County Horror” under the Apex Publications imprint. Sometime around the beginning of September, I got an email from Jason Sizemore: ![]()

Rise of the Warrior Cop by Radley Balko5/12/2023 ![]() And under Trump, these powers were expanded in terrifying new ways, as evidenced by the tanks and overwhelming force that met the Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020. Nixon’s War on Drugs, Reagan’s War on Poverty, Clinton’s COPS program, the post-9/11 security state under Bush, Obama: by degrees, each of these innovations empowered police forces, always at the expense of civil liberties. ![]() The unrest of the 1960s brought about the invention of the SWAT unit-which in turn led to the debut of military tactics in the ranks of police officers. Today’s armored-up policemen are a far cry from the constables of early America. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as an other-an enemy. But according to investigative reporter Radley Balko, over the last several decades, America’s cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. ![]() ![]() ![]() As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. The last days of colonialism taught America’s revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. ![]()

Ovid the art of love book 15/12/2023 ![]() ![]() His Tristia recount his lonely banishment away from Rome at the end of his life. ![]() The continuing fame of these poems was owed partly to his authorship of a much greater work, the Metamorphoses, by far the most important source for Greco-Roman mythology for later Europeans. He makes it clear repeatedly that for him love (read “sex”) is a game much like poker, demanding great powers of strategy and deception, but not the very foundation of life itself. His beloved was typically a pretty but ordinary courtesan, not a noble lady in a tower. Unfortunately much of his humor was lost on Medieval interpreters, and they often discussed his ideas over-seriously in the context which came to be known as “courtly love”–a concept which would have been alien–and ridiculous–to Ovid. It was not only Chaucer who read Ovid’s love poetry every educated person with the slightest interest in the subject did so. What Humphries does not make clear is that these originally rather frivolous poems had a momentous influence on later European civilization. Some of the references to modern culture have dated since 1957, but it is still interesting and useful. Read the introduction to this translation. Publius Ovidus Naso (Ovid): The Loves (25-16 BCE?) Notes for the translation by Rolfe Humphries of selections from the Amores and the Ars Amatoria. ![]()

The unspoken name5/12/2023 ![]() In order to do so, he wants Csorwe, along with another young person in his employ, Tal, to seek and return to him a specific object, the Reliquary of Pentravasse. His aim is to regain control of the lands from which he was exiled. The mage, Belthandros Sethennai, is a very powerful man who is on a mission. She owes him her life and thus, is extremely loyal to him and his goals. Over time he trains Csorwe to be his assassin. She decides to accept his offer and flees with him. Honestly, this was quite a challenging read for me.Ĭsorwe, sounds like doorway, is a teenage girl who has been raised to become the sacrificial wife of the Unspoken One, an ancient god living within the earth.Įntombed on what is to be her death day, a mysterious mage appears and offers to rescue her and provide her with a new life. Liar temptress soldier spy summary5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Her gift for adaptation is clear in her title, a steal of John le Carre’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” which she apes down to its lack of serial punctuation. Her few-hundred sources include Drew Gilpin Faust’s landmark “This Republic of Suffering” (reviewed here in 2008), summarizing just one of its theses in a single paragraph and never citing it again. She scanned everything from Emma Edmondson’s pension file to Shelby Foote’s three-volume classic, “The Civil War,” touching every base in passing and gleaning at least a grain from every field. ![]() Abbott’s high achievement lies in her Augean compilation of published and archival material her 13-page bibliography embraces the entire conflict. ![]()

Penelope douglas bully series in order5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The way Tate became the bully was handled brilliantly. Jared bullied her before she went to France for a year, but she comes back a badass. Jared didn’t make Tate’s life miserable, and she never became depressed or suicidal. There were no sexual assaults or threats of it and no physical abuse. I’ve read hundreds of books since then! So this is very memorable. I read it in 2014 and was surprised how much I still remembered from it. We’re going to go head to head, because neither of us wants to back down. I’m not interested in avoiding him or turning the other cheek anymore. I’m hoping that after a year of breathing room, he’s moved on and forgotten all about me.īut even if he hasn’t changed, I have. ![]() Now I’m back to finish up high school and get the hell out of here forever. ![]() I spent a year studying abroad and bathed in the freedom of life without Jared. ![]() I worried about what was around every corner and behind every door. His pranks and rumors got more sadistic as time wore on, and I made myself sick trying to hide from him. I’ve been humiliated, shut out, and gossiped about all through high school. But then, one summer, he turned on me and has made it his mission to screw up my life at every opportunity. We’re neighbors, and once, we were best friends. He would never refer to me so informally, if he referred to me at all. Very steamy love to hate to love YA/NA romance ![]()

George orwell why i write essay5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() So here we are in all the consciousness, subconsciousness and unconsciousness of the 2020s. At root, a slogan’s a war cry, whether it’s take back control, make America great again, kauf nicht beim Juden, it’s the real thing, I’m lovin’ it, just do it. The word slogan derives from Scottish Gaelic, from the words sluagh and ghairm, meaning war and cry. Though some are more powerful than others, all slogans are powerful. It also gave me an acute consciousness of the working of power in language. I see now how it equipped me at the age of 14 with a way to register not just that power will corrupt but how it will. I was a much earlier reader of Animal Farm, 40 years earlier, in a class in Inverness High School in the Highlands of Scotland, where it was on the excellent school curriculum. I was a latecomer to reading 1984, and when I found out that some of its original possible titles were The Last Man in Europe and The Last European I shook my head at the synchronicity, because I finally read it for the first time in 2016, in the initial shock of the EU referendum which, by proffering what looked like a future, shunted this country back into its past. « Who controls the past controls the future, and who controls the present controls the past. » This is one of your most famous examples of sloganeering, straight out of the totalitarian state, Oceania, in your great novel 1984. ![]() |
